The Tree

The Tree
A Road to Crawley Project
Commissioned by Crawley Museum and Crawley Council
2011-2012

I worked with pupils from Thomas Bennett Community College, young residents of The Foyer sheltered accommodation in West Green and some of Crawley New Town’s first residents, to create digital collage works that now adorn the boarded windows of ‘The Tree’ building.
Using my own research at Crawley Museum and other archives and the narratives shared by the participants, I sourced images of people places and things which hold significance for Crawley.
I worked with the participants to enable them to create paper models – montages of images past, present and future.  These were then combined in digital collages, which were designed to fit each of 14 windows on the Tree building.
Each window space was seen as a stage in which to create an imagined scenario connected to the towns histories and apocryphal stories.
Workshops took place at the school, Hawth Theatre, Crawley Museum Building and the Foyer
